I recently needed to look up the warranty status on a couple of Dell servers that I don't have physical access to. I logged into ESXi and started to poke around. Tuns out you can find the service tag this way, it just wasn't where I thought it would be.
The service tag information can be found at the bottom of the Processors information window under the Configuration tab. Now I know!
